The emergence of the Internet has completely transformed certain industries (e.g. E-Commerce, Publishing), however the field of Software Development has not significantly changed since the beginning. An idea is formed and requirements gathered. A developer or company team starts to write some code, checks it into a version control system, creates a build system that compiles it and runs automated tests, eventually creates a deployment system to push the code the correct runtime server(s). The code is written from mostly from scratch, integrating a few libraries or infrastructure components from open source components or commercial vendors. Bugs a recorded, projects managed, and then the software is made available to customers.
